Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is an open-world action role-playing game developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment, based on the Dragon Ball franchise. The game chronicles the history of Goku (or Kakarot), following his childhood battles against the Red Ribbon Army.

The game is designed to be an RPG fighting game somewhat similar to Dragon Ball Xenoverse and its sequel. While the game is generally considered to be open-world, it is not completely seamless as the areas are divided into individual hubs that are locked until reaching certain points of the story. The game is also designed to be simple and intuitive, with a focus on the characters’ abilities to fight and use Ki to perform special moves.

The game features character levels, a world to explore, NPCs to talk to, side quests to take on, items to use, moves to equip, and so on. The game retells the classic anime story that begins with Raditz’s arrival on Earth and ends with the defeat of Kid Buu. However, along the way, fans are introduced to moments in a new light, and there are plenty of new side stories to explore.

As a Dragon Ball love letter, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is nearly perfect, featuring an amazing world and attention to detail. But as an RPG and action-adventure game, it’s only good. Its combat can be fun and some of the more in-depth elements are a good change of pace, but a lot of it feels pointless or time-consuming. The game has amazing and vibrant visuals, large open areas to explore full of collectibles and side content, and faithfully recreated cutscenes. However, it may not be the most technically refined or user-friendly, especially for newcomers to both the narrative and the play style.
